An update on the room move that might take forever

We recently decided to move three of our children into a really massive room on top of our garage. The plan is to split the room into four quadrants—one for each child and the fourth as a playroom. We are also taking a smaller room for our office. So far, so good

.

Except what we discovered is that moving has to be a one-for-one process. I have to take out a bookcase and bring in a bed. There is no option to just pack up a room and move everything at once. There is literally no space to store extra items if we tried. So for over a week, we have been doing this insanely slow dance, move one thing in, bring one thing back, swap this for that, repeat endlessly.

To make it more exciting, my husband hurt himself on the first attempt to move a bookcase. It came apart and dropped on his knee, leaving a nasty scrape and bruise. After that, my fourteen-year-old son and I were carrying recliners into the room, lifting them over other furniture and just trying not to die. Not fun at all.

Now, almost all the major furniture is in the big room crib, bed, dresser. My seven-month-old won’t move up there until she is done with the Sid phase, so I just have some of her stuff in a corner for storage. She has a space, just not a bed yet.

Meanwhile, a few desks still need to be moved, which will require my husband’s help. While waiting for him, I am trying to organize other things. The desks are currently taking up the playroom space, which happens to be the entry and exit point to the room, making it tricky to move anything.

To top it off, my two-year-old and five-year-old decided to help. They disassembled boxes holding the playroom items and scattered them everywhere. So now, in addition to moving furniture, I have a huge glopping mess to clean up. You might think that as a mom of six I would have seen this coming. I kind of did, which is why I said, “Hey, don’t touch this.” But, of course, who listens to Mom?

So now I have probably about two hours of cleanup before I can even continue the progress I had planned. Not a lot of fun, but here we are. This is motherhood.d

Life in our house is loud, messy and full of literally everything. Love, noise, laundry, laughter, and definitely could use a bit more grace. I'm happily married to my best friend, grounded in my Catholic faith, and fueled by five to six hours of sleep per night and adrenaline.

I try to find joy in the everyday — even when it's wild, because without the little bit of joy, this life would be unbearable. This space is for the moms in the middle of it all: the ones juggling family, faith, work, and wonder. The ones that need someone else's messy life to make their own seem better or somewhat normal. You're not alone, and you're doing better than you think.

Welcome to Six Sweet Smiles — where we celebrate the mess, the miracles, and everything in between.
